June 6: Rethinking Waste – presented by Delta Institute and the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies
Americans have among the highest per-capita rates of waste generation in the world. Join our panel to consider the future of waste. They will shine the spotlight on what happens to our waste, consider how to realize value from materials we send to landfill, and discuss whether the ultimate goal – zero waste – can be a reality. April 4: Growing Food and Jobs in the City: Seeding and sustaining urban farms – presented by Delta Institute and the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies
The rising interest in local food and sustainability is cultivating a broader conversation around urban agriculture. Social enterprises, businesses, non-profits and enthusiasts are creating innovative ways to grow healthy food in cities. In Chicago there are plans to create one of the nation’s largest urban farm districts in the city’s south side, making our city the perfect place to explore the role of urban agriculture as a catalyst for economic, social and environmental change. March (multiple dates): Delta Institute and Cook County present free workshops on the new deconstruction ordinance
Cook County’s new Demolition, Debris and Diversion Ordinance came into effect last November. Construction, demolition and deconstruction contractors can get tips at tricks at one of the four workshops on March 20, 21, 27 or 28. Municipal employees – from City managers and planners, to code enforcement officers – can learn all their community needs to know at one of two workshops on March 13 or 14.

Larger companies – including manufacturers – are investing more time, money and energy developing sustainability plans in order to save energy, reduce costs and build their reputations. Our 3rd Green Soapbox, this time featuring speakers talking about the future of sustainability in 3 critical areas of urban living: water, roads and neighborhoods.
