Welcome to our Driven Doer series! Every month, we highlight the passionate, motivated people who help Delta work toward its vision of achieving a Midwest region in which all communities and landscapes thrive.

Meet April Mendez who co-founded Fresh Coast Capital, an organization that seeks to guide cities to achieve and implement their vision of comprehensive green infrastructure.

What do you do?

I am a co-founder and the VP of programs at Fresh Coast Capital, a mission-driven green infrastructure developer, and president of our affiliated nonprofit, Fresh Coast Communities, which is dedicated to getting the most good out of green infrastructure.

What drives you and inspires you to get up in the morning?

The smell of coffee and an inherent respect for the human spirit…not necessarily in that order. Everyone deserves an environment where they can thrive and make their mark on our collective future.

How are you currently involved with Delta; what’s exciting about the project?

Fresh Coast and Delta have teamed up in Gary, Indiana to transform a historic brownfield site–the former home of the Bear Brand Hosiery Plant–into a thriving community asset. A grove of hybrid poplar and cottonwood trees is busy at work removing soil contamination, and we’ve engaged Gary residents in a placemaking initiative that’s resulted in a beautiful, community-driven vision for new public art and flower installations.

Describe Delta in 4 words or less:

Sustainability think tank.

What’s your favorite place in the Great Lakes region?

Marquette Park in Gary, Indiana; it’s a gorgeous interplay between the industrial legacy that built Gary and the incredible natural beauty and biodiversity that surround it.
