Welcome to our Driven Doer series! Every month, we highlight the passionate, motivated people who help Delta work toward its vision of achieving a Midwest region in which all communities and landscapes thrive.

Meet Clayton Harris III, Executive Director at the Illinois International Port District.

What do you do?

I am the Executive Director for the Illinois International Port District (IIPD) where I focus on developing and maintaining a world-class port that operates as a modern, strategically driven facility that epitomizes our tagline of being the “Greatest Multimodal Facility in North America.”

To do this, we are focused on generating and expanding economic activity through intra and interstate, as well as, international movements of commodities while being a regional economic stimulus for the benefit of the City of Chicago and State of Illinois in an environmentally responsible way.

What drives you and inspires you to get up in the morning?

Beyond my 3 and 5 year old boys jumping on me in the mornings (EVERY morning), I wake up inspired and energized thinking about the potential of the port. The IIPD is the greatest multimodal port in North America and finding new and smart ways to help the IIPD realize that potential is a challenge and my drive.

How are you currently involved with Delta; what’s exciting about the project?

I am involved with Delta through their expertise in and with grant writing. Delta will help the IIPD find and apply for necessary resources which will allow the port to grow.

Describe Delta in 4 words or less:

Lighthouse in a storm.

What’s your favorite place in the Great Lakes region?

Promontory Point, a peninsula jutting into Lake Michigan. It is located in Chicago’s Burnham Park.
