What is Green Soap Box?
Green Soap Box is an annual event, organized by the Delta Emerging Leaders Associate Board, that explores an environmental issue impacting our local community. You are invited to join in our next virtual Green Soap Box discussion with local experts participating in a panel. This year’s topic will focus on Cannabis Sustainability and Equity in Illinois.
Why Cannabis?
Cannabis is a rapidly evolving industry nationwide, and especially in Illinois since the Cannabis Regulation in Tax Act went into effect on January 1, 2020. However, there are still many considerations that need attention and dialogue to ensure that the industry grows in an environmentally sustainable way and through a lens of promoting equity. Cannabis is the most energy-intensive agricultural crop in the United States, requiring both heavy water consumption and energy. Parts of the Illinois Act worked to address some of these concerns, including required measurements of water runoff, limits on energy consumption, and more.
Our event will also touch base on According to the Act, existing medical marijuana license holders could receive an early start and begin adult-use recreational sales on Jan. 1, 2020. Out of all the existing medical marijuana license holders in Illinois, none were people of color. So, although the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act was intended to address the racial inequities, many prospective BIPOC owners are still awaiting their licenses.
Please join us as we explore more of these topics in depth – and stay for a live Question & Answer session where you can submit your own questions to the panelist experts.
