Calling for community volunteers!

Join in supporting local forestry efforts by participating in a tree planting day at Winthrop Harbor’s West Broadway Dog Park! In partnership with Lake County and the Village of Winthrop Harbor, Delta Institute is hosting a tree planting day to support local beautification and ecological enhancements in the community. Be a part of the event to help plant new trees in the community as well as learn from professionals at Johnson’s Nursery about tree planting best management practices.

This partnership is part of a broader, overarching effort to develop a regional “Tree Planting Consortium” that supports tree canopy restoration activities, community engagement, and partner capacity-building across Lake County, Illinois; Kenosha County, Wisconsin; and Racine County, Wisconsin.

Event Details:

  • Date: Wednesday, October 28
  • Time: Begins at 11:00am. Plantings will take approximately 1-2 hours.
  • Venue: Winthrop Harbor West Broadway Dog Park
  • Address:940 W Broadway Ave., Winthrop Harbor IL 60096
  • What to bring: We recommend bringing a pair of work gloves and a bottle of drinking water.

Dress comfortably for outdoors, as volunteers will be actively participating in tree planting activities.

We are partnering with Johnson’s Nursery for this tree planting day. They are supporting our efforts by helping develop tree planting plans, assisting with native species selection, and will also provide a tree planting demonstration on-site, thereby offering best management practices for all community volunteers in attendance.

Johnson’s Nursery is headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Their plant nursery grows and ships plants to wholesale, municipal, and landscape clients across the Midwest, including Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and beyond. Their plant center is open to the public and easily accessible for homeowners from Milwaukee to Madison and from Green Bay to Chicago. Click here to learn more about Johnson’s Nursery.

All are welcome to attend. Please note that actively participating in tree planting activities may require volunteers to be required to utilize hand and finger dexterity; continuously bend, stoop, kneel, or crawl; and lift and/or move objects between 10 to 25 pounds. Guests may also be asked to move to tree planting locations that traverse non-paved pathways, such as grass fields or rocky gravel. Nevertheless, any guests who are unable to participate directly in these activities are invited to attend to observe and learn.

Visitors requiring specific mobility accommodations are advised to contact the Winthrop Harbor Department of Public Works or the parks department directly at 847-872-5283.

Please note that this year’s event will be recorded via photography, videography, and audio recording. Guests authorize Delta Institute, its assigns, and transferees to edit, copyright, use, and publish the same in print and/or electronically.
